Spirituality
"Spirituality can be linked to all human experiences, but it has a particularly close connection with the imagination, with human creativity and resourcefulness, with relationships — whether with ourselves, with others, or with a transcendent reality, named or unnamed, but often called the Divine, God, or Spirit. Spirituality can also be connected with a sense of celebration and joy, with adoration and surrender, with struggle and suffering. . . ." Professor Ursula King
To us, spirituality is not just the development of the tangible, but also the intangible - those impactful life moments that help shape our ideas, values and belief in ourselves and others. Essentially, to find ways of talking about those things which feel 'beyond words'.
In doing this we have also been working on supporting the children to understand ‘spirituality’ through a meaningful language that is accessible to all. We have given consideration to this through studying the idea of ‘ows, wows and nows!’
Ows - times of difficulty - those things that can set you back in life and take your breath away for a period of time.
Wows - those awe and wonder moments in life - the times you want to breathe and capture, remembering every part of the moment.
Nows - the moments of ordinary grace, the day to day - those moments when we feel completely present and can feel happy for that time
We encourage children to think about how the ows wows and nows can make them feel and how to find the special within each.
We actively plan to reach children in this way and celebrate our spirituality, no matter what our faiths or beliefs.
Within the context of our church school, we support children to engage spiritually through things such as the appreciation of a picture, by enjoying our beautiful environment or by speaking directly to God through prayer. We have a range of prayers that we say collectively each day and at these times children can participate in talking to God or take their own moments for contemplation, however that looks for them.
The prayers we use in school have been composed by our children who worked with some of our foundation governors and Reverend Richard to put together their thoughts on the themes of integrity, creation and friendship.
Please feel free to read our spirituality policy to see how we work to achieve this and where we look for these opportunities in our curriculum.
