Puffin Class (Year 1)

Half Term - Week beginning 25.5.20

Dear Puffins and parents,

Happy bank holiday weekend!  We hope you are looking forward to the sunshine this week and you and your families are able to make the most of the sunny weather by getting out and about walking or riding your bikes.

Well done to all of you who have been completing home learning tasks, we are very proud of you.  Thank you for sending us updates - there has been some lovely handwriting we have seen this week.  We hope you have all enjoyed making your Time Capsules - remember you can keep adding to these during lockdown.

As it is half term week, we are not posting specific tasks for you to complete, instead we are attaching links to optional activities.  There are handwriting sheets below that you can download to practise the cursive style we have been learning at school this year.  If you are unable to print, just copy the joins onto a lined piece of paper.   There are also wonderful online lessons at Oak Academy online learning - please find a link below, click on the Year 1 page where you can choose from English, maths, topic and PE lessons.  BBC Bitesize lessons are also available, you will find the link to the lessons below.

As usual, keep up your super maths facts practice - counting in 2s, 5s, 10s, beginning to learn the 2x and 5x table facts, doubles and halves and number bonds.  Remember to read every day with an adult and practise any tricky words you find difficult to read.

Keep looking after each other at home, keep smiling and stay safe,

from Mrs Burnett and Mrs Dillon smiley

Welcome to Year 1!

Welcome back to Year 1! We hope that you all have had a wonderful Christmas and have enjoyed lots of family time! Your children have come back to school filled with such enthusiasm and we are really looking forward to getting to know them and watching them grow and develop over the coming year.

We have got lots of exciting plans for Year 1. This term our topic is Explorers. We will be studying the seasonal changes in Science and will be focusing on locational knowledge of the UK in our topic lessons  and Van Gogh portraits in our art lessons. During this term, we will be focusing on the children's application of phonics skills, applying known and new sounds to different reading and writing activities, while also developing their own story telling skills ready for writing over the year. We will also be having daily phonics and reading lessons. In maths, our focus is on embedding a strong understanding of place value and counting, before moving on to looking at addition and subtraction of numbers.

Puffin Class will have PE on a Wednesday afternoon with a multi sport teacher. Please make sure that their kit (t shirt, shorts and long jogging bottoms) is clearly named.

Please make sure that the children bring their reading books into school every day; we have volunteer ladies who come in to read with the children and will change books as required. When they have finished a book, and have read it with an adult at school, they can exchange it for a new one.

How can you help? We ask that you read with your child every day and sign their reading record book, adding any comments if needed. Just 10 minutes spent reading and discussing a book will make a huge difference to your child's ability and enjoyment of reading, which in turn impacts on their ability to access other subjects throughout the curriculum.

Mrs Burnett will be teaching Puffin class on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesday mornings and Mrs Dillon will be teaching the class on Thursdays and Fridays. Mrs Dawson will be supporting the learning in Year 1. If you have any concerns or questions, please send in a note, an email, or pop in to see us after school. We are looking forward to working together with you to help your child have a fantastic time in Year 1.

Kind regards,

Mrs Burnett & Mrs Dillon.
