Puffin Class (Year 1)

Our wonderful autumn afternoons at Forest School! Mud pies, weaving, swinging and creating new leaf men!

Welcome to Year 1!

Autumn 2019

Welcome back to Year 1! We hope that you all have had a wonderful summer and have enjoyed lots of family time! Your children have come back to school filled with such enthusiasm and we are really looking forward to getting to know them and watching them grow and develop over the coming year.

We have got lots of exciting plans for Year 1. This term our topic is All About Me. We will be studying the human body and our senses in Science and will be focusing on our own family history and local knowledge in our topic lessons  and Van Gogh portraits in our art lessons. During this term, we will be studying the books 'Everywhere Bear', 'Owl Babies' and 'The Tiger that came to tea', focusing on the children's application of phonics skills, applying known and new sounds to different reading and writing activities, while also developing their own story telling skills ready for writing over the year. We will also be having daily phonics and reading lessons. In maths, our focus is on embedding a strong understanding of place value and counting, before moving on to looking at addition and subtraction of numbers.

Puffin Class will have Forest School on a Monday afternoon and PE on a Wednesday afternoon with a multi sport teacher. Please make sure that their kit (t shirt, shorts and long jogging bottoms) is clearly named.

Please make sure that the children bring their reading books into school every day; we have volunteer ladies who come in to read with the children and will change books as required. When they have finished a book, and have read it with an adult at school, they can exchange it for a new one.

How can you help? We ask that you read with your child every day and sign their reading record book, adding any comments if needed. Just 10 minutes spent reading and discussing a book will make a huge difference to your child's ability and enjoyment of reading, which in turn impacts on their ability to access other subjects throughout the curriculum.

Mrs Entwistle will be teaching Puffin class on Mondays and Tuesdays and Mrs Burnett will be teaching the class on Wednesday mornings, Thursdays and Fridays. Mrs Dawson and Mrs Reeves-Town will be supporting the learning in Year 1 through the week. If you have any concerns or questions, please send in a note, an email, or pop in to see us after school. We are looking forward to working together with you to help your child have a fantastic time in Year 1.

Kind regards,

Mrs Entwistle and Mrs Burnett.
