Puffin Class (Year 1)
Week beginning 13.7.20
Dear Puffins and parents,
Thank you for bearing with us the past few weeks. We are now in the last week of term for the Puffin class of 2019 - 2020. How quickly has this last term gone? It is sad that we didn't quite get to have the year we all expected, and we have genuinely missed seeing all of our Puffins in class. It has been lovely to catch up with you all over Zoom and to see those of you who have been coming into school We know that most of you visited Mrs Doberska last week for your transition session into Year 2. We have heard wonderful things from Mrs Doberska about you all - well done Puffins!
So for our final week, we have attached below the lovely story of The Cautious Caterpillar and some activities for literacy and maths. In particular there is an activity to help with transition from Year 1 to Year 2 and any questions or concerns the children may have about this.
Miss Cullen has also created Virtual Sports Day tasks for the whole school - we have attached this below also. Please have a go and have fun!
Keep on keeping safe!

Welcome to Year 1!
Welcome back to Year 1! We hope that you all have had a wonderful Christmas and have enjoyed lots of family time! Your children have come back to school filled with such enthusiasm and we are really looking forward to getting to know them and watching them grow and develop over the coming year.
We have got lots of exciting plans for Year 1. This term our topic is Explorers. We will be studying the seasonal changes in Science and will be focusing on locational knowledge of the UK in our topic lessons and Van Gogh portraits in our art lessons. During this term, we will be focusing on the children's application of phonics skills, applying known and new sounds to different reading and writing activities, while also developing their own story telling skills ready for writing over the year. We will also be having daily phonics and reading lessons. In maths, our focus is on embedding a strong understanding of place value and counting, before moving on to looking at addition and subtraction of numbers.
Puffin Class will have PE on a Wednesday afternoon with a multi sport teacher. Please make sure that their kit (t shirt, shorts and long jogging bottoms) is clearly named.
Please make sure that the children bring their reading books into school every day; we have volunteer ladies who come in to read with the children and will change books as required. When they have finished a book, and have read it with an adult at school, they can exchange it for a new one.
How can you help? We ask that you read with your child every day and sign their reading record book, adding any comments if needed. Just 10 minutes spent reading and discussing a book will make a huge difference to your child's ability and enjoyment of reading, which in turn impacts on their ability to access other subjects throughout the curriculum.
Mrs Burnett will be teaching Puffin class on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesday mornings and Mrs Dillon will be teaching the class on Thursdays and Fridays. Mrs Dawson will be supporting the learning in Year 1. If you have any concerns or questions, please send in a note, an email, or pop in to see us after school. We are looking forward to working together with you to help your child have a fantastic time in Year 1.
Kind regards,
Mrs Burnett & Mrs Dillon.
