PE

At Long Itchington CE Academy, Physical Education (PE) is a vital part of our curriculum, reflecting our Christian ethos and the school’s vision of working “with all your heart” (Colossians 3:23). We believe that PE nurtures the whole child by promoting a purposeful, happy, and inclusive learning environment where every pupil can develop their unique skills and qualities. PE provides our pupils with opportunities to build physical confidence, resilience, and teamwork, preparing them not only for the next steps in their education but also for a healthy and active life beyond school.

Key Aims

Our PE curriculum aims to inspire pupils to enjoy physical activity while developing essential skills in a broad range of movement and sports. We seek to foster positive learning behaviours such as resilience, respect, and responsibility, which align with our school values and support our improvement priority of consistent behaviour and high aspiration. PE at Long Itchington CE Academy is designed to develop pupils’ physical competence, confidence, and knowledge of how to lead healthy lifestyles, ensuring they are ready to embrace new challenges with enthusiasm.

Content and Skills

Pupils will acquire fundamental movement skills, including coordination, balance, and agility, alongside sport-specific skills such as throwing, catching, and striking. They will engage in a variety of activities that develop teamwork, communication, and leadership, supported by the PE Hub’s structured and progressive curriculum resources. Through these experiences, pupils will also develop an understanding of the importance of physical health, safety, and wellbeing. Our approach ensures all pupils, including those with SEND, have access to appropriately adapted activities that meet their needs and enable them to flourish.

Progression

Learning in PE is carefully sequenced from Key Stage 1 through Key Stage 2 to build on prior knowledge and skills, ensuring steady progression in physical literacy and cognitive understanding of tactics and strategies. Early years focus on foundational movement and basic coordination, progressing to more complex skills, game rules, and teamwork dynamics by the end of Key Stage 2. This progression supports pupils in mastering key concepts before moving on and embeds a lifelong love of physical activity.

Wider Impact

PE at Long Itchington CE Academy contributes significantly to pupils' personal development, well-being, and social skills. It reinforces our Christian values by encouraging pupils to be respectful, ready, and safe, promoting positive attitudes and behaviour that enhance learning across the whole school. Participation in PE builds pupils’ confidence and self-esteem, helping them to become active, responsible citizens who contribute positively to the school community and beyond. Ultimately, our PE curriculum equips pupils with the physical skills, healthy habits, and personal qualities they need for success in school, future education, and life.
