I have been a school governor in the village since 1986 and  I have seen many changes to both the educational  system and our schools over the years. Although I have concentrated on the support aspect of a governor's role (Finance and premises), I have witnessed a continued improvement in the education standards to meet the ever changing curriculum and OFSTED requirements.
The school is in a good position to meet any further changes over the next few years and I hope my experience as a governor and County Councillor can contribute to the challenges these may present.

Governors' Blog - 20 January 2017

I am Melanie Edwards and three years ago, as a parent of a little boy in Reception Class, I volunteered to join the governing body at Long Itchington Primary School as I was very keen to learn more about the education system so that I could understand how I could best support our son on his journey through his school years. At the same time this would also give the opportunity to support the teaching staff in their endeavours to provide the highest quality education to all the children at the school.

During this time my role within the governing body has evolved so that I now have responsibilities for supporting governor training and skills and more recently I am now the link governor for science and will be meeting regularly with Mrs. Hancox,  the lead teacher for Science at the school. As I have a background in medical science this is a subject that I am very passionate about and, during a recent visit to the school, I was delighted by the enthusiasm and creativity across all the school years for this subject. The school is striving towards the Gold Primary Science Quality Mark having already been awarded the Silver, as well as being one of the leading schools in the Ogden Trust, and I will continue to liaise with Mrs. Hancox at the school as this work continues.

Hello all,

As Vice-Chair of the Governors my role is to be a critical friend, supporting the school in meeting its aims of enabling every child to make the most of his or her potential and develop a love of learning.

My wife and I have lived in Long Itchington for ten years and we have two children in the school aged 6 and 9. The village has been a wonderful place for our children to grow up, not least because of the community in which they live and the friendships they and we as a family have made whilst we have been here.

I have worked in Education for fourteen years, the majority of this time in primary schools, working as a teacher across different age-ranges and also in a variety of senior leadership positions. I now work at a University supporting the development of teachers of the future.  I look forward to using my experience to work with the school community to continue to ensure we deliver the best for the children of our village.

Best wishes

Dave Cousens

Hello all so it’s Governors’ Blog time again – I want to take this opportunity to communicate a few of the topics that we have covered in school over recent weeks. My role as Chair of Long Itchington C of E Primary School is a privileged position that offers me the chance to work with the other governors and teaching staff to positively influence the strategic direction of our school. Personally I have worked in international sales for close to 20 years and have travelled globally for much of that time. Settling into Long Itchington in 2003 I now have 2 children within school in years 4 & 6 – where did that time go?

  1. Governing Body and Senior Leadership Team meet half-termly and at our last Full Governing Body meeting, our teachers were invited to attend in conjunction with the Senior Leadership Team to support open and effective communication between the governors and all teaching staff. Key to this meeting was discussion of our learning improvement priorities. Long Itchington is not a coasting school – our priority is always to strive for continuous improvement and the Governors’ role of “critical friend” is to challenge our dedicated team to do even better every day and support them on that journey.

Discussing our learning improvement priorities, the team ran collectively through the schools performance data and, as a result of our findings, fresh emphasis will be placed on maths. Going forward you will see that mathematics is more visible throughout the school and we would also like to challenge you as parents to integrate maths into as much home learning as possible…..More Soon…

Hello all and welcome to the first Governors’ Blog. This Blog will become a common feature in the school newsletter, helping the governors to communicate on a regular basis with parents and children alike.

It is important to the Governing Body that you know who we are and what we do to ensure the school is meeting its potential alongside its staff and the children.

Over the coming editions of the school newsletter each existing governor will introduce themselves via the Blog, explaining their role within the Governing Body as well a little about themselves personally.

The Blog will also provide a continued transparent insight into the role of the Governing Body, current activities and news on the work carried out with the strategic leadership team and staff.

In addition it will also enable communication for you, the parents and carers, with the Governing Body to ensure the vision of Long Itchington School is realised.

If there are any items you would like to see covered in the Governors’ Blog then please do let us know.
